The most common allergies include those caused by pollen, dust mites, pet dander, and certain foods.

The high prevalence of these diseases is due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

Although some people have a genetic predisposition to develop allergies, the environment also plays an important role. Exposure to pollutants, changes in diet, and modern lifestyle can alter the immune system’s response, causing exaggerated reactions to substances that shouldn’t pose a threat.

What is the relationship between mast cells and allergies?

Allergies are exaggerated immune system reactions to harmless substances, known as allergens. Some of the most common allergens include pollen, dust mites, animal hair, and certain foods like peanuts or shellfish.

Imagine the immune system as a security team for a building. Its job is to protect the body from real threats, such as viruses and bacteria. However, in allergic individuals, this team gets confused and overreacts to harmless substances.

This disproportionate response is what we call an allergic reaction.

When an allergic person comes into contact with an allergen, their immune system activates mast cells, triggering symptoms such as:

Sneezing and nasal discharge

Itchy skin or hives

Swelling of the throat or difficulty breathing

Red and watery eyes

The term allergy was introduced in the 20th century by scientist Clemens von Pirquet, who observed that the immune system can protect, but also cause hypersensitivity.

Mast cells are immune system cells responsible for detecting potential threats. They are found in large amounts in:

Skin (causing itching or hives).

Lungs (causing respiratory symptoms).

Intestines (triggering reactions to certain foods).

These cells contain chemical substances, notably histamine, which is the main cause of allergic symptoms.

How are mast cells activated?

IgE-dependent activation (Immunoglobulin E)

This is the most common mechanism in allergies:

Sensitization: the first time an allergic person comes into contact with an allergen, their immune system produces specific IgE antibodies.

Binding to mast cells: IgE binds to FcεRI receptors on the mast cells’ membranes, preparing them for future reactions.

Histamine release: the allergen activates the mast cells, which release histamine and other inflammatory mediators.

This activation causes itching, swelling, redness, nasal congestion, and difficulty breathing.

IgE-independent activation

Mast cells can also be activated without IgE in response to:

Chemicals and medications: some drugs can activate mast cells without IgE, causing pseudo-allergies.

Pattern recognition receptors (TLR): these detect pathogens and activate mast cells as part of immune defense.

Pro-inflammatory cytokines: molecules such as IL-33, TSLP, and IFN-γ can stimulate histamine release and other pro-inflammatory substances.

What happens when mast cells are activated?

They release a large amount of inflammatory substances, causing allergic and inflammatory symptoms.

Among the most important mediators are:

Histamine: responsible for inflammation, redness, itching, and increased vascular permeability.

Proteases (tryptase, chymase): enzymes that contribute to inflammation and tissue remodeling.

Eicosanoids (prostaglandins and leukotrienes): substances derived from fatty acids that amplify inflammation.

Cytokines and chemokines: chemical messengers that regulate immune responses and attract other inflammatory cells.

Nutraceuticals and their impact on mast cells

The term nutraceutical was coined in 1989 by Stephen DeFelice, combining nutrition and pharmacy. It is defined as:

“A food or part of a food that provides medical or health benefits, including the prevention and treatment of diseases”

How can they influence mast cells?

Nutraceuticals not only provide nutrition but can also help manage diseases, including regulating mast cell activation in allergic reactions. and improve control of allergic reactions by modulating mast cell activation. Except in individuals who have allergies to any of the mentioned foods.

To obtain the same benefits without risk, alternative foods containing similar compounds but without allergenic potential can be sought.

Although nutrition can play an important role in modulating the immune response, it is essential to adapt the diet to each person, especially those with food allergies.

The goal is to take advantage of the beneficial effects of bioactive compounds without compromising the patient’s safety.

Regulating mast cells through diet is an accessible and natural strategy that can be used as a complement to conventional treatments and supplementation.

While studies have shown that certain compounds in supplement form have beneficial effects, it is important to highlight that these same compounds are found in some foods.

Therefore, a diet rich in flavonoids, polyphenols, carotenoids, essential fatty acids, and anti-inflammatory spices can help modulate mast cell responses and reduce inflammation.

The use of dietary components with immunomodulatory effects represents a promising alternative for the prevention and management of allergic diseases related to mast cells.

If help is needed to personalize the diet, it is advisable to consult a dietitian or nutritionist specialized in psychoneuroimmunology.

This approach is an opportunity for both future research and personalized nutrition strategies in managing allergic diseases and disorders related to mast cell activation.

 <div class="elementor-element elementor-element-474ab05 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con
